Property Description

Located in the spectacular Cairngorms National Park, Candacraig offers a rare opportunity to experience the luxury and splendour of a Baronial mansion, parts of which date back to the 17th century, and sample Highland hospitality at its very best. This private retreat is set within 18 acres of sumptuous grounds with manicured lawned terraces leading down to its own lochan.

With its pepper pot turrets and steep slate roofs Candacraig subtly mixes French chateau style with traditional Scottish Baronial architecture. Originally occupied by many generations of the Anderson and then Wallace families it was sold to Gordon and Anita Roddick, founders of the Bodyshop retail chain, in the 1980s. They extensively renovated the property and later sold it to Billy Connolly and Pamela Stephenson. Candacraig often received media attention as many Hollywood stars visited as guests of the celebrity couple. The current owners, who purchased the property in 2014 from the Connollys', have added their own tasteful style to this stunning property and now offer Candacraig for exclusive use hire.

Guests can relax and entertain in the impressive and atmospheric Drawing Room with its wood panelled walls, highly decorative plaster ceiling and ornate fireplace. This generous sized room is a perfect venue for a special event or celebratory ceilidh. Or enjoy an afternoon tea sitting on the comfortable window seats and soak up the views over the lush gardens and open countryside beyond. The oak lined library has been newly transformed into the Whisky Library which boasts a fine selection, brought together through many years of collecting, of single Malts and Scottish gins for guests to savour in front of the roaring fire.

The plush tartan décor of the Dining Room is perfect for candlelit banquets and special occasions. When fully laid out for an evening of fine dining it is a captivating room. After dinner walk along the fascinating wood carved passageway to the Games Room for a few frames of billiards on the full sized table or retire to the Whisky Library for drinks and perhaps play a few melodies on the baby grand piano.

Each of the immaculately presented bedrooms have great character and the attention to detail is continued in the bathrooms complete with deluxe toiletries. The 12 bedrooms are spread over two floors and feature fine Egyptian cotton bedding and beautiful designer fabrics.

The Grounds

Enjoy exploring Candacraig’s lavish grounds where you will find an array of magical settings. The terraced lawns are bordered by mature fir trees with winding paths that lead down to the lochan. Follow the small burn, beside the lochan, criss crossed by bridges and discover a hidden garden with delightful statues and arches.

One of the lower lawned areas is surrounded by box hedges and features topiary trees and a classic looking stone pillared circular tempietto. Admire the well maintained and stocked Victorian walled garden, a peaceful retreat in itself. A highlight of many guests stay is an evening spent seated around the woodland bonfire, tucking into a tasty BBQ and simply enjoying the ambience created by this magical spot lit by lanterns and the firelight.
